An even greater sign of recent reliability improvements can be seen in this years J. D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), in which Volvo placed a rather pathetic 30 out of 37 nameplates. How does such a poor VDS ranking show recent improvements? Its important to keep in mind that the 2004 VDS reflects 2001 model year cars only, and that significant gains in quality in recent years, such as that shown in the 2004 IQS for instance, wont be reflected in this years VDS survey.

Volvo trucks appear to have a history of violent fires in Europe according to an attorney. A tunnel fire in Mont Blanc killed 39 people that a Volvo truck was blamed for starting. Similar fires have been said to occur in the past, and Volvo confirmed that 14 of its model 320 and 380 trucks caught fire the previous year.

After finding an electrical problem with engine cooling fans that could lead to overheating, Volvo has voluntarily chosen to reel in pretty much every car it made between 1999 and 2001. It's the largest recall in the company's history. Affected models include the S60, S80, V70 and XC70, and the repair involves changing out the entire cooling fan assembly.

NHTSA said manufacturers are required to mail a recall notice to all purchasers, owners, and dealers when a safety defect or noncompliance with federal safety standards is found. The agency urges owners to wait until they receive notification from the manufacturer before contacting their dealers to schedule the repair work.
